How To Handle the Holidays as a Grieving Man

Accessing holiday cheer can be very challenging after someone important to you dies. Expectations of togetherness and celebration can increase the loneliness and frustration of grief. While others seem to be cheerfully planning the days ahead, grievers struggle to share in this spirit and often end up feeling like an outsider. This workshop will focus on the multiple ways the holidays can affect male grievers and discuss strategies you can use in getting through these difficult days.
The format used for this workshop includes 15 minutes of an individual describing his experience dealing with the holidays after his wife died followed by 15 minutes with a grief and loss educator discussing: common challenges men face during the holidays; how the holidays can affect the grief process; and examples of how rituals can be helpful when grieving. The workshop will conclude with 15 minutes for Q and A.

Getting Support: How to Ask for Help

Accessing help can be very challenging after someone important to you dies. Grievers sometimes struggle to get the appropriate help. This workshop will focus on the multiple ways male grievers can locate support and discuss strategies you can use in getting through these difficult days.
The format used for this workshop includes 15 minutes of an individual describing his experience dealing after his wife died followed by 15 minutes with a grief and loss educator discussing common challenges men face.  The workshop will conclude with 15 minutes for Q and A.

The panelists for this workshop are:

• Dr. Kenneth J. Doka, Professor Emeritus at the Graduate School of The College of New Rochelle and Senior Vice-President for the Hospice Foundation of America.  Dr. Doka has authored or edited over 40 books and over 100 articles and book chapters.  His book, “Men Don’t Cry, Women Do: Transcending Gender Stereotypes of Grief” was instrumental in identifying the unique differences in grieving styles.  He is editor of both “Omega: The Journal of Death and Dying” and “Journeys: A Newsletter to Help in Bereavement.”
•  Adam Larson is a father and technology professional. He serves as a Board Member on the National Widowers’ Organization because he had to walk the path of intense grief when his wife died. He navigated the tricky path of single parent widowhood while balancing a career and trying to help others.
•  Ken Levy joined the NWO Board following the loss of his wife of 18 years to a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer. Following this he became an advocate for battling inflammatory breast cancer, spearheading a New York statewide proclamation of IBC awareness day. Levy struggled with complicated grief and found it hard to find bereavement support that focused on the male perspective of loss, the kind that NWO now helps to provide. Levy works as a free-lance journalist and hosted radio’s The Environmental Minute, a daily program on ecological issues.
